Information About IIT - Bombay
The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are a group of autonomous engineering institutes in India. They are formed by Institutes of Technology Act, 1961. It lists sixteen institutes located at Bhubaneswar, Chennai, Delhi, Gandhinagar, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Indore, Jodhpur, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Mandi, Mumbai, Patna, Ropar, Roorkee and Varanasi.
The IITs have a common admission process for undergraduate admissions. It was based on IIT-JEE, replaced by Joint Entrance Examination.
The graduate level program that awards M. Tech. degree in engineering is administered by the older IITs (Kharagpur, Bombay, Madras, Kanpur, Delhi, Roorkee, Varanasi, and Guwahati). M.Tech. admission decisions are made on the basis of Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE). In addition to B. Tech and M. Tech programs IITs also award other graduate degrees such as M.Sc. in Engineering, Maths, Physics and Chemistry, MBA, PhD and more. Admission to these programs is through Common Admission Test (CAT), Joint Admission Test to M.Sc. (JAM) and Common Entrance Examination for Design (CEED).
IIT – BOMBAY
IIT Bombay, the second in the chain of IITs, was set up in 1958. It was the first IIT to be set up with foreign assistance. The funds came from UNESCO in robles from the Soviet Union. In 1961, the Parliament decreed IITs as 'Institutes of National Importance'. Since then, IIT Bombay has grown from strength to strength to emerge as one of the top technical universities in the world.

Dual Degree
The Institute offers a 5 year Dual Degree programme (DD) in all Engineering departments. This programme is the Bachelor and Master degree combined together. That means that upon successful completion of the necessary academic requirements, a student is awarded two degrees:
1. B.Tech. degree of the parent department (e.g. Mechanical Engineering)
2. M.Tech. degree of the Specialization within the parent department (e.g. Thermal and Fluids Engineering)

GATE Office conducts GATE, JAM, and CEED examinations for admission to post graduate programmes
The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is an all-India examination administered and conducted in eight zones across the country jointly by the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore and seven Indian Institutes of Technology on behalf of the National Coordinating Board - GATE, Department of Education, Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD), Government of India. Admission to post graduate programmes with MHRD and some other government scholarship/assistantship at engineering colleges/institutes in the country are open to those who qualify through GATE.
Joint Admission Test for M.Sc. (JAM) is an all-India examination administered and conducted across the country jointly by the seven Indian Institutes of Technology on behalf of Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD), Government of India. JAM is an all India Entrance examination for admission to M.Sc. (Two Year), Joint M.Sc.-Ph.D. Dual Degree and other post - bachelor degree programmes at IITs.
Common Entrance Examination for Design (CEED) is an all India examination conducted by IIT Bombay, on behalf of the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India. CEED is a qualifying examination for Admission to Master of Design (M.Des.) Programmes at IISc Bangalore, IITBombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Guwahati and IIT Kanpur, and Ph.D. Programmes in Design in some Institutes.
