Shear force:
If the external load on the left of the section are acting upward (or) right portion downward in it is called positive shear force.
If the external load on the left portion of the section acting downward (or) right portion upward in it is called negative shear force.
Bending moment:
Bending moment is set to be positive (or) sagging if the moment of the force in the left side of the beam is clockwise (or) the right side of the beam is counter clockwise.
Otherwise the beam tents to bending in concave manner.
Bending moment is set to be negative (or) hogging if the moment of the force in the left side of the beam is counter clockwise (or) the right side of the beam is clockwise.
Otherwise the beam tents to bending in convex manner.
